ISBN in DVDPedia

Post by steve2065 »

Is the number scanned from the bar code on the DVD (the number at the bottom of the bar code) saved in the data base? I can find UPC and ASIN but there not the same number.

UPC is for DVDs (among many other goods in North America), ISBN is for books, and the ASIN is used exclusively by amazon. http://www.aw-wrdsmth.com/FAQ/isbn_upc.html

While I don't own it, I'm sure you'd find the ISBN in BookPedia, but it bears no relevance in DVDPedia.

Hope that made sense. ;)

The UPC field should contain the scanned number which will not be the same as the ASIN (except in the case of books as Nanook mentioned).

I have just recently get a few older DVD and it seem that maybe the UPC number returned to DVDPedia is is the UPC number of the current release of the movie not the number entered. IE I have a copy of "Evita" the UPC number on the back is 717951000200 but the number return is 9786304806418 they both return only one DVD with the last UPC number. so I guess I just need to replace the UPC number in DVDPedia in order to search with UPC. (if i catch it)
Maybe a new field for the number scanned in a new release of DVDPedia :D

Thank you for the sample so that we could test it out. DVDpedia prefers the EAN number over the UPC number if a DVD has both. I have updated the beta to take into account the searched on number and use the one that matches, so that you can then search internally in your database with that number. Please try out the beta and let us know if you run into any more of those.

But if the UPC Number on the DVD isn't saved in the data base it can't find it. if it helps here are two more movies I'm having trouble with
"Multiplicity"the UPC on the back is 043396824492 and DVDpedia has 9780767806800.
"Good Morning, Vietnam" the UPC on the back is 786936239928 and DVDpedia has 9780788853654.

Thanks for taking the time to help

Thank you for the details. With the beta you should not have a problem with a new search of "786936239928" – Good Morning, Vietnam. With multiplicity Amazon actually returns the wrong UPC and will send that up the chain to them (they return 004339682449 with the extra 0 of the EAN but they also remove the check digit 2 from the end).

clearly this is not a DVDpedia problem. i've done web search on different sites and they returned the same number as Amazon and even a third number. then i did a sample of 25 of my dvd's and 13 had a different number. (mostly older dvd's ) so i guess doing a search using a bar code reader is not a good option for now.
