Lost database

Hello,

I've recently gone through the ordeal of losing my hard drive and all of its data. I've managed to get most of it back, but I can't seem to find the database(s) for my CDpedia and DVDpedia libraries. They were both quite large and would be daunting to start all over again. The data recovery software I used renamed a lot of the files to generic names. I'm aware that the file name of the database is Database.pedia - or something to that effect - my question is what KIND of file is that? I might be able to sort through these generic names to find the database if I know it's an XML file, for example.

Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks

Hello, the file is an SQLite file. Basically it's a subset of the SQL 92 standard. A little more info that might help you:

SQLite is an embedded database library that implements a large subset of the SQL 92 standard. Its claim to fame is the combination of both the database engine and the interface (to said engine) within a single library, as well as the ability to store all the data in a single file.

This means that the recovery software might see it as a binary file. Depending on how smart it is, it might even recognize it as:

SQLite database (Version 3)

Which is what you get when you ask the mac what type of file it is, using a console prompt.

The database lived in ~/Libray/Application Support/DVDpedia/Database.pediadata

Unfortunately I don't think the data recovery software found the databases. However, I discovered that I exported an HTML of my DVDpedia database (unfortunately not my CD database) and uploaded it to my website.

From the HTML export it's possible to get the titles of the movies to use in DVDpedia's add multiple feature. Some of your entries came from Amazon, so set your search site to Amazon in the regular search window and then copy paste the following list of Amazon IDs into the add multiple field (although it's just one line high it can handle a list).

The rest came from the Australian site, change search sites and then copy paste the remaining list of movie titles. Because the search is based on title you have to double check the results. Specifically generic titles like "Ice Age", it might download "Ice Age 2: The Meltdown" instead of the original.
