Import from DVD Sphere

Post by Mdareau »

Hoping I may seek some wisdom....

Been working on bringing over my 700+ files (without much luck....). I don't have any issues in understanding the import TO DVDPedia, but it seeing that I'm not requesting the right information from Sphere to begin with.

The last time I "tried", seemed like the records were all coming over, but what was created was another "collection" that called itself DVDfile.

SO, twofold question.....what am I missing to properly set up the export on Sphere and can't I make that "DVDfile" inclusive into the Library" files when I'm done?

TIA!

By default all imports are placed into a library-independent collection first (marked with a grey collection icon) so you can make sure that everything went well. To make the import part of your Library, select the collection and choose 'Include collection in Library' from the File menu. After that you can delete the imported collection if you like.

For the export from DVD Sphere, just make sure that you have downloaded the settings file from our DVD Sphere migration page and that you check the option "first record contains field header" during export.
If you run into any trouble with the \r replacement (the second step of the migration), just send us your exported file, let us know where you keep your DVD Sphere data folder and we can do the replacement for you. You'll find our email address on the support page.

Hi Nora,

First of all, I appreciate your help, still have some questions to your answer....

When I get into the export section, I don't have a "include collection in Library". I go to "export to text", then to definitions (where I don't do any thing" ...then to "define rules", where the first record box is ticked. From there, I guess I run into the problem, since I have to set something to make my file....

...sorry to be such a bother...

Sorry if my previous message was confusing - the 'Include collection in library' part comes in DVDpedia, i.e. once you have imported your collection. So ignore that for now.

These are the steps you have to take first for the export from DVD Sphere:

1) Select type > Check the option "Export to a text file".
2) Define rules > File definitions > Check the option "Replace Carriage returns in fields with './r"
3) In the next window, press the 'Load' button and choose the settings file that you downloaded from our DVD Sphere migration page. That'll populate the window for you with all the right settings.
4) Check the option "First record contains field header".
5) Finish the export.

Now you have the exported file from DVD Sphere and you need to do the following before you can import it into DVDpedia:

1) Open it with a good text editor such as TextWrangler (it's free).
2) Do a search and replace with the following settings: Search for "\r" and replace with "\rAND_THE_PATH_TO_YOUR_SPHERE_DATA/Covers/f_"
(So for example, if you keep your DVD Sphere data on your desktop, the replace would look like this: "\r/Users/[username]/Desktop/DVDSpereDataDemo.app/Covers/f_")
3) Save the file and you can now import it into DVDpedia.

If that second part of steps with replacing the \r sounds too complicated, just do the export as described above and then send us the file and we can do the replace for you. (Do let us know the exact location of your DVD Sphere data though so we can put in the right path.)

I believe I've gotten it, from experimenting, but finding the problem was in your original set of migration instruction, which might bear an update on your end.

The original sets advises me nothing re :2) Define rules > File definitions > Check the option "Replace Carriage returns in fields with './r", in the Define Rules page.

This is the only advise I followed (Download this settings file, unzip it and load it using DVD Sphere's text export. Make sure the "first record contains field header" option is checked), which didn't make me think of an ./r field and that it had been already imbedded in Sphere when opened from your Style filter. It also doesn't tick that option (2) Define rules > File definitions > Check the option "Replace Carriage returns in fields with './r", after loading the Style filter.

Anyway....I manually entered it and things to be happy....might not have been "quite" right, since I had to import the album art..but, it's here...whew!

Thanks Again...

The DVD Sphere style file for some reason does not let you define that you want to check the new line character needs to be replaced (possible cause it's in the next pane of instructions). It's a bit tricky, will try to clarify our instructions. I am glad you were able to import all your data.
