Upgrade problem from 2.3.0 to latest :(

I see there was another post regarding this problem, but there was no resolution so I thought I'd start a new one.

I am running Mac OS 10.5.6, 4 GB RAM upgrading from v2.3.0 to the latest version 4.4.3.

On opening the new application it wants to update the database, after clicking okay it sits on the "Updating Collection" screen indefinitely.
I let it run over night and it still reported "Updating Collection information". Upon quitting the application and restarting, it simply wanted to begin the process again.

Any suggestions?

I found a work around. I installed version 3.x and the upgrade finished successfully. From there running 4.x had no problems updating the collection. So all is well. Now to explore the new features...

Excellent news. I am going to run some test as there must be a step I forgot in upgrading all the way to 4 from 2.3.
