Broken file?

Post by corowakid »

Hi,

I'm a really happy Bookpedia user, and have just now run across my first stumper.

A few weeks ago I entered a book via 'Net ISBN access into a bookcase location, which normally also makes an entry into the Library folder. I was moving some books around today and was transferring file entries between bookcase locations.

One book which appears in the Library folder, had a reference for the bookcase, but when I accessed the the bookcase the entry wasn't there (?). I checked the Library entry, and even removed the original bookcase entry, then re-typed it. It still didn't appear in the bookcase (!) I deleted the original Library entry and then did a 'Net access anew using a new bookcase as the reference point, and it appeared, as well as appearing in the Library.

Anyone hazard a guess as what might have happened? I checked the forums and couldn't see any reference that could explain what might have happened.

I'd also appreciate any advice as to whether there's a procedure to check if there are any other references like this, aside from checking individual entries in separate bookcases (don't want to check 9000 entries!)

Thanks

had a reference for the bookcase
You mean you were using one of the custom fields to label the book as belonging to a certain bookcase, but the book was not present in the collection that you created for that bookcase. It could be that you originally added that book directly to the library and then forgot to drag it over to the collection for the specific bookcase? If you are using a custom field or the location field to label the books, it might be easier to then use smart collections to collect the books into a single view based on the value of the field. This way you only have to label the books once, and the program will sort them in collection based on that label. No need t add them to a specific collection.

Nah, I prefer to establish bookcases as locations, and I ALWAYS enter the book information there. I have another half who is not computer literate and it took me a while to get her persuaded to log all her books. She wants it by bookcase, by room, and what she wants, she gets. She's happy with the present setup, and if I come at her with another "system" I'll find she will lose interest. Then I'll always be on call to help her find a book (!).

I'm going to do a bit of checking tonight, to see if I come across a similar problem(s). I figure if the total number of books shown in all locations equals the total shown in the Library then I've got at least a cross check on quantity. Maybe it won't determine whether every book in every location is in the Master Library, and I'll do some sampling to see what I get. I thought it might be possible to cross check a Location(s) against the Library to see if the numbers agree.

Thanks for the input - but I need something I can work with, with what I've already got set up.

I think it was most likely an oversight as I mentioned above. If you find anything peculiar you can always email us your database file compressed (~/Library/Application Support/Bookpedia/Database.pediadata). It's easier to understand your setup by seeing your database in action, and I can better help you.

I think I may be having a similar problem to the one stated here. I recently downloaded PocketPedia for my Iphone. I am a PC user so I am using it as a stand alone application. I took the time to input all of my DVDs into a collection. Shortly after they were all in there they disappeared. My collection still says there are 217 DVDs in there and if I search from them again and try to add them again, the star is there indicating I already have the file in my collection, however I cannot see anything at all in the collection. Is there any way to fix this or do I need to delete the program, reinstall and add them all again?

Thank you for your help!

This was a bug with our 1.1.0 update, that occurs when deleting an entry while the collection was filtered via the search box. We created the fix immediately a few days ago and 1.1.1 should be out any day now as soon as Apple approves the update. The entries are in your database as the star icon shows, but unfortunately are no longer linked from the collection. You will have to delete the program and reinstall, but wait for the update 1.1.1 to be out so that the bug will not happen again. Since this is our bug we can try to recover the entries for you, but you would need to get a hold of a Mac in order to be able to pull out your collection from Pocketpedia so that you can then email it to us. The whole process is a bit complicated, but if you have access to a Mac and would like us to do that, let me know and I can give you the instructions.

Actually I just thought of the iTunes backup. If you haven't done a backup yet connect your iPhone to your computer cancel the sync and then right click on your iPhone on iTunes and choose the restore from backup command. This way installing all the information as it was in the last backup.

I tried the backup and that didn't work. I see that the update is out now, and I'll have access to a Mac tonight. Can you please tell me what I need to do now. Thank you!

Connect the iPhone to the same wireless network as the Mac. Then download the beta of our program and run it. While holding down the option button select the "Pocketpedia" menu command under the "Help" menu. Then press the sync button in the Pocketpedia collections screen. It will then transfer your database file from Pocketpedia to the Mac. It will be located on the Desktop called PocketpediaBackup.sql, compress that file and email it to us.
