Pocketpedia as standalone program

Post by Zubcut »

I don't have a Mac and I understand that Pocketpedia is really to be used in conjunction with the desktop application. Still I am finding the program to be very useful as a standalone app to catalog my DVD collection on my iPhone. However, I am having trouble deleting items in the list. The swipe gesture brings up the delete button but after pressing the button I find the item is still in the list. Also is there any way to have the items in the list be sorted, ie. alphabetically or by genre? They are sorted under a letter heading but within that letter they are listed in the order they were added. Thanks for any help you could provide.

Fortunately, my delete problem has gone away. I am still curious about sorting.

Glad to hear the delete is working for you now. Sorting isn't an option at the moment but it's already on our feature request list for the future.

We want Pocketpedia to be used as a standalone app as well and are slowly working towards improving it. In the next version the bug with the sorting inside the letter section will be fixed; then with future version will be adding sorting options.

This is the original poster and I discovered why the delete wasn't working. I was touching the delete button too far to the right where the tiny alphabet letters appear. This took me to the letter I touched instead of deleting the item. Maybe you can move the delete button to the left if that is possible. I now am just careful to touch the left side of the delete button.

Thank you for the feedback. Unfortunately, we are not in charge of the placement of the delete button, Apple is; it's part of the iPhone SDK. We will pass on your feedback to Apple so that they can adjust the placement when the index letters are present to avoid hiding the button under the letters.

Clarification requested:

You are saying that my DVD list will appear in each letter group in the order it was entered, rather than in alphabetic order?

That has certainly been my experience.
The search Amazon function is interesting, but fairly inexact. If I search for a title like "Johnny English" it does not return the title but will show titles with the word 'Johnny'.
If I search for "Mr. Bean" (which I don't own, but know also stars Rowan Martin) it will return "Johnny English" within 11 titles.
If I search for a famous Disney title it will probably be the 5-6th one listed out of 10 famous Disney movies presented.
I find it frustrating and time consuming to try to search for each title of my 1900+ DVD library in alphabetic order. I find it more efficient to select and add any title that I recognize as being in my collection.

UNFORTUNATELY, that means the titles go in out of alphabetic order.
I currently sync my iPhone to my Toshiba laptop because of convenience. Therefore I am using Pocketpedia standalone.
What you seem to be saying is that I cannot fix the problem at this time. Correct?

What is the time frame for having my DVD collection in simple alphabetic order? Weeks? Months before an update fixes it?
I'd say listing results in alphabetic order should have been a HIGH priority, even for free software. It does not make my DVD library listing very useful. I have 149 titles beginning with "M" alone, and they are not sorted at all!

I own an iMac G5 (PPC) and plan to purchase the DVDPedia program for my Mac after the next payday, but moving the iPhone from syncing PC to syncing Mac is guaranteed to wipe the contents. Is there any way to preserve the work I've done so far when I get around to doing that?

We tend to be very quick with updates but with Pocketpedia it's a whole new distribution system and we are still learning about it as well as waiting for a bug to be fixed by Apple. On our end the sorting bug is fixed and the update is almost ready, but I can't say when the update will be out as nobody knows how the internals of the App Store work. It is unfortunate that there is no disk mode on the iPhone so that users could move files around. I do not know what happens when you change computers, the logical thing is that application information should be retained. As Pocketpedia is not the only program that would benefit from this behavior. Pocketpedia is copied with the iTunes backup. I do not know if the Windows backup files are the same as the Macs and can be moved to the Mac and then restored on the iPhone via iTunes on the Mac. On the Mac they are on ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/UniqueIDForDevice/ no idea where the files are on the PC, but you could do a search for your iPhone ID. Option click on serial number: on the iTunes iPhone info pane and it should show the ID.
