Drag file to link doesn't work

Post by ScottH »

In the Table view, with the Info view turned on, I know that I should be able to drag a file to the gray title bar in the Info view, have the cursor turn into a curved arrow, and drop a link to a file there. And I can make that work, when the file is located in most places.

But I store back covers of DVDs that I'm adding manually. I want those back cover images backed up with the DVDpedia database, so I'm naming them myself and storing them in the Library/Application Support/DVDpedia/Covers folder off my home directory (which I think you recommended a while back). HOWEVER, while I can manually link files from that folder, the drag doesn't work.

Is this intentional, for some reason? Is it a bad idea to be linking to files placed manually in the Covers folder (I hope not--I have hundreds set up that way)? Or is this a small bug that can be fixed?

Thanks. I love DVDpedia and have over 1100 titles in it so far.

That is an intentional feature. The info view does not recognize the drags from inside the "Covers" folders to avoid recognizing a drag from the image view exactly to it left. A small unintentional drag and drop of a few pixels could link the movies cover art as a regular link, plus it doesn't look pretty that it's willing to link it's own cover. But I have updated the program to be smarter and tell the difference between a drag that originated inside the program and one that originated from the Finder. Download the beta and you will be able to achieve that one drag that was disabled.

There is no problem with keeping the extra covers inside the data folder. It has the advantage of being included in a backup up of the database and the link are also relative in case you ever move the database. Also when removing a link you can remove the associated file via an alert dialog. I personally would have created another folder named "BackCovers" to keep my images from DVDpedia's and recognizing a back cover links faster due to the folder name, but that is just a matter of personal taste.

I didn't have a chance to check out the Beta, but I've just upgraded to 4.3.0, and sure enough, the drags from the Covers folder work perfectly now! Thanks very much for changing this.
