barcodes

Post by ekohnke@stanford.edu »

Hello,

I have a unique situation. I love the usability of Bookpedia and I would love to implement it but I would also need to be able to generate my own barcode labels. I run an A/V lab at a College and we checkout a lot of high end cameras, microphones, light kits etc... We are currently using File Maker Pro and I can't stand it. Ideally I would love to use a system like Bookpedia but I would need to enter the items manually and assign them barcode numbers that I would have to generate (probably in another program). Scanning the equipment would make the check in and out of equipment much faster than typing and it would more efficient. Is there any way to assign products in Bookpedia a barcode that I create? If not is there any compatibility with other programs?

Thanks, I'd love any advise.

There is no direct check in and out feature. But it's on the the possible feature enhancements as we have received this request from a few libraries that use Bookpedia. You could definitely add your own barcode to one o the custom fields. Scanning the barcode into the search field on the top right would filter your library for just that barcode (it's highly unlikely that a barcode of decent length will match anything else). You would still have to drag the entry over to the borrowed collection for check out or use the keyboard shortcut. You will have to play around a little with the setup to see if it's better than your File Maker setup. Thank you for the feedback on what would make the program even better for you.
