IMDb not updating again. DVDPedia hangs.

Any trouble you encounter with the Pedias, here's the place to ask for help.

IMDb not updating again. DVDPedia hangs.

Post by kbarnes70 »

Here we go again :) It's that time when I select ALL my entries, remove all the IMDb ratings and then do a mass update using Get Advanced Info/IMDb. As has happened to me many times before, it refuses to update. It will (usually but not always) do small batches OK - say up to 10. But if you give it the lot to go at in one pass, it hangs. There's no way to gracefully exit DVDpedia when this happens - only a Force Quit will get you out of it. As I type this, it has hung for the umpteenth time today - this time on 22 entries. Eventually, by doing a few at a time I will get the entire database updated. I guess this is an IMDb problem not a DVDpedia problem so I doubt if Bruji can do anything about it, but it sure is furstrating. I report it just so that Conor and his team are aware that the problem still exists. Using Beta 34, all OS-X updates etc applied, 4 gigs of RAM. Incidentally, I am updating from the main collection not from a Smart Collection.

Edit: Have discovered that some movies will not update even if done singly - eg Amadeus and The Conversation currently will not update no matter what. It may be that when DVDpedia encounters a movie that won't update it then sits there waiting for it to update - ie for ever - rather than timing out after a while and moving to the next movie in the list. This would explain why small batches work - less chance of encountering one of these 'rogue' movies.

KInd regards

Hi Keith,

Thank you for the detailed description. Could you please send me any messages from DVDpedia in the console log, as well as the two entries that won't update as .dcard. To create a .dcard drag the entry over the desktop, this will create the file that you can then attach to an email. This way I can try to reproduce the problem with your data.

Thanks Conor. I have sent them to you by email. Many thanks.

AAMOI, if I try to batch update the ratings from Amazon UK, they update extremely rapidly and in full. Pity the Amazon ratings are useless :)

Kind regards,

Conor - I have done some more investigating and tried to update several batches of about 10 entries at a time. Where these have hung I have updated each entry one at a time and there is always an entry that will not update via IMDb. This then seems to cause DVDpedia to sit there, presumably waiting for the update that never comes before then moving on to the next entry, which of course it cannot do. There seems to be a lot of these 'rogue' IMDb entries that will not update in addition to the two I sent you by Dcard in the email.

Kind regards,

Keith

Just to close this topic now - thank you, Conor, for Beta 36 which has now solved this problem entirely (until, presumably, IMDb change things at their end again). As always, thank you for listening to your users and for responding so quickly to any problems or requests.

Kind regards,

Keith

Not sure if this is any use to you now but I was just updating using IMDb and I was using their website at the same time. I tried searching for an actress on their site and instead of getting my search results a message was displayed saying something along the lines of "You've been accessing a lot of info on our site in the last few minutes, we ask that you take a break as a high volume of traffic from a handful of users can have a negative impact on the experience of other users", if that makes sense.

That's interesting. I've never seen that message but if they do indeed limit users from accessing their database repeatedly, I guess that could be a problem. Having said that, the Beta Conor made to resolve it was working perfectly yesterday. I updated over 300 records and it all went perfectly. Maybe it's an issue with IMDb at times of high traffic - eg during the evenings? Thanks for the feedback.

That sounds feasible to me.
