Pocketpedia

Post by dbrady »

I'm having trouble setting up my pocketpedia on an iPhone. Is Pocketpedia syncable with Bookpedia?
If so is there a manual on line that may assist me?
Also, I notice that Pocketpedia no longer available on Amazon. Has there been a problem, is there support for Pocketpedia?
Anyone, Thanks

No reason to apologize. :)

Under the Help menu:

Check that topic for instructions and troubleshooting tips, if you haven't already. Also, in case it matters, which version of Bookpedia are you running? I've forgotten if/how the Amazon changes relate to Pocketpedia synching, though you're running a new enough version of Bookpedia if it's successfully connecting with Amazon now.

If you still can't get it working any specific description of where it's failing can be helpful for troubleshooting. Imagine temporarily switching roles -- pretend someone asked you for help and you'd want more details from them to better understand and isolate the problem. :)

To answer your earlier question, yes, there is a manual for Pocketpedia. However the sync in Pocketpedia is one-way only at the moment, from Bookpedia to Pocketpedia. You can import your database from Pocketpedia into Bookpedia if you need to, i.e. if you loose your Bookpedia database for example, but it's not an actual synchronization.

(Just in case this is what you're looking for: first make sure your iPhone and the computer are connected to the same wireless network. Then run Bookpedia on your computer. Go to the help menu and choose Pocketpedia (if you click again on the help menu there should be a check mark next to Pocketpedia indicating the sync is active). Now hold down the Option key and go into the 'Help' menu again and click on Pocketpedia with option held down. Use the 'Import' button to add the data to Bookpedia.
By default all imports are placed into a library-independent collection first (marked with a grey collection icon) so you can make sure that everything went well. To make the import part of your Library, select the collection and choose 'Include collection in Library' from the File menu. After that you can delete the imported collection if you like.
Also, the cover images will not be part of this import but you can use the 'Download cover art for selection' or 'Get advanced info' commands from under the Advanced menu to download those once more.)

Fortunately that's the direction dbrady wants to go:

Because Pocketpedia is no longer available the sync is turned off by default in new versions of Bookpedia that have never done a sync with Pocketpedia before. (The sync required permissions from users with the firewall turned. We want to avoid that request for permissions on new installations for demo users who might not be willing to give permission to a demo software.) To turn it on click on the help menu and there is a "Pocketpedia" option it should contain a check mark next to the menu command if the sync is on. If the check mark is missing select that menu command to turn on the sync.

Re: Pocketpedia (v1) with Bookpedia 4.6.1

Post by macbelly »

DVDPedia happily syncs with Pocketpedia 1 on my iPhone. Now I want to enable syncing of Bookpedia (4.6.1) as well. When I try to sync Bookpedia I get a message for a split second (probably something like '...requesting collections...') but nothing is synchronised.
Following above instructions I started looking for the Pocketpedia menu item in the Help menu but that's not present in the current version. Is there another way to switch syncing on? (I peeked in the preference plist but didn't see an obvious candidate to achieve this).

Thanks for your help,
Erik

Hi Erik,

You have to hold down the option key on your Mac then click on the help menu. The Pocketpedia menu is a debugging option and hence why it's hidden, selecting Pocketpedia will present you with a window that has a checkbox to enable the old sync for Pocketpedia1.
