Umlaut like ä,ö,ü are shown wrongly after import

Post by joey »

I yesterday bought DVDPedia and imported my DVDProfiler database. It worked well so far as explained on your website but now in titles or text, words with ä,ö,ü (german specifics) are shown as % or other strange characters. My database contains 849 entries, thus it would take days to correct this manually. I checked the XML file and for me it looks fine (but I am not an expert), the characters are correctly shown as ä,ö,ü.

Is there any hint you could give me to solve this issue as I could not find anything in the posts? This would be very much appreciated.

Additionally one suggestion: I could not find a function like the "reassign collection number by...title (or others) which I found very helpful in DVDProfiler. Probably something you could think about to implement in a future release.

This has to do with the encoding of the file being incompatible with the Mac. Open it up in a text editor and try copy pasting the entire file to a new document and using "save as" and set the format to UTF8. Then try the import of the newly created file. If this does not solve the encoding issue please send us the original .xml file so that we can test it out if you don't mind.

You can reassign the collection ID by title. First sort your movies accordingly by clicking the title column. Select all your movies with command-a and then under the edit menu you will find an "Incremental Collection ID" option. Set the number you would like to start the numbering at and then use the apply to selection button.

Brilliant, I never got such a quick answer and especially one which worked :D

I had to use a different text editor as the OSX "Text Edit". Using "Text Wrangler" worked very well.

Thank you very much.

Regarding the sorting I do have one issue left. Especially when you have tv series like stargate the different seasons are often listed like "third season", "fourth season" etc. If you now sort the fouth one will be above the third.

One could rename this but is there also an option like in DVDProfiler to automatically populate a field (sort title) which can be edited when needed without the need to overwrite the original title?

one additional remark to the sorting of the collection, titles like "Die Legende von Beowolf" etc. are all shown in the "d" section when you sort alphabetically. With an automated filled field "sort title" this could be changed without overwriting the original title.
(Der, die, das are the german equivalents for "the"; "ein" is the equivalent for "A")
For the english titles it seems to work that the "the" or "A" is ignored in the sort order

Do you have "Ignore foreign articles during title sort" enabled under the General tab of Preferences?

Sort titles have been discussed in other threads, if you feel like searching for 'em. :)

thanks for this, I found it finally in the german version

I searched for it but I am sometimes struggeling because the discussions are all about english menu entries which do not exist in the localized version and my help file is also in english.

In the help file for example I found a description of a "sort title" field but I could not find it in the application.

Now I did

Sorry if I duplicated a discussion

I am glad you found all the options to set up DVDpedia to your liking. Describing the program in different languages can be confusing. I can use DVDpedia in Deutsch but just because I know the program well and know which menu is what. I should have mentioned TextWrangler as we use the big brother BBEdit for this kind of fixes. If you mix languages you can also use the sort title to not ignore the article as would be the case for "Die Hard", also useful for "2001" if you would like to sort it under "zweitausend".
